Gemini Hits 1B Users, Fastest Growth in Google History

Google's Gemini app now has more than 1 billion monthly active users, the company said Tuesday. It reached that mark faster than any prior Google product, including Search, Gmail, and YouTube.

The AI assistant crossed the threshold nine months after Google reported 650 million users in October 2025. Sundar Pichai, Alphabet's CEO, called Gemini "our fastest-growing product ever" and said it is the 14th Google product to hit 1 billion users.

Gemini launched in February 2024. It started on Android and later arrived on iOS through the Google app. Since then, user behavior has shifted heavily toward voice and visual interaction. Google said 63% of users now talk directly to Gemini. One in five Gemini Live sessions includes live camera feeds or screen sharing. The app generates more than 150 million images each day.

On Android, Gemini can automate tasks across more than 40 apps, including ride booking and restaurant reservations. Apple users are also adopting the app quickly. Google said more than 100 million active users are on iOS, and Mac users interact with Gemini twice as often as users on other platforms.

The milestone puts Gemini ahead of OpenAI's ChatGPT in absolute user count. ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly active users in May, about three years after its launch, according to a June report. Anthropic's Claude app had 56 million monthly active users at the same time. ChatGPT's year-over-year growth was 62%; Claude's was 640%.

Google said Gemini helps small businesses create marketing materials by combining images, video, and audio in one place. Josh Woodward, vice president of Google Labs, said the goal is to make Gemini "the most personal, proactive and powerful assistant."

The company is integrating Gemini across its product lineup, including Search, Workspace, and Android. Pichai's post on X said the app helps users "spark new ideas and get things done."
