Tencent hosted 21 internet influencers, tech professionals, and officials from 15 countries for a five-day tour of Shenzhen and Chengdu this month. The program, called Future Close-Up, is now in its fourth edition and co-organized with the China International Communications Group Center for the Americas. The theme this year was AI for a Shared Future.
Participants toured BYD's Shenzhen headquarters, where they watched robots assemble electric vehicles. Isabella Sole Bisio, an Italian robotics engineer at a Singapore-based tech-energy company, said she was struck by how much of the production line is automated. Johnny Bonk, an AI consultant at a German firm, said he was impressed by what he called "China speed" – the pace at which companies test new features with customers.
The group also visited Tencent's minor protection program in Chengdu, which uses AI to detect fraud and guide children on responsible use of the technology. John Paul Uminga, a social innovation ecosystem builder at the University of Queensland, said the program's nine-year run and its integration across schools, communities, and local government make it a model worth exporting.
Kevin De Ridder, a legal assistant at Belgium's Ministry of Higher Education, tested Tencent's AI tools during the trip. He said an image-generation app produced a picture in about 15 seconds, compared with more than a minute on some overseas platforms. He plans to keep using the app after returning to Belgium.
Several participants said they saw the visit as a starting point for deeper collaboration. Guillermo Palacios, a Peruvian entrepreneurship academic, said understanding China's technology ecosystem is now essential because its advancement is reshaping the global economy. Jerry Chong, domain lead architect at DHL Express, said he hopes to promote technology cooperation projects between China, Malaysia, and other ASEAN members after experiencing Tencent's Yuanbao AI assistant and Hunyuan 3D generative model.
Pelumi Fadare, an associate at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, wrote in a social media post after the trip that China's leading tech companies show the value of long-term investment, talent development, and strategic planning. She said the country's development experience could offer Africa a reference for building innovation ecosystems.
