HDFC Bank and Bharti Airtel led gains of ₹92,995 crore among India's top-10 firms as crude spike and Mideast tensions hit markets. AlphaScala scores: HDFC 48, ICICI 57, UL 58.
A spike in crude oil prices and a fresh escalation of Iran–US tensions reshuffled India's top-10 listed companies by market value last week. Four of them added a combined ₹92,995 crore; the rest lost ₹49,294 crore.
HDFC Bank posted the biggest gain, its market capitalisation surging ₹35,808 crore to ₹12,69,454 crore. Bharti Airtel added ₹34,897 crore, reaching ₹11,98,774 crore. Life Insurance Corporation of India climbed ₹16,066 crore to ₹5,60,205 crore. Reliance Industries, the country's most valued firm, rose ₹6,225 crore to ₹17,71,206 crore.
On the other side, Hindustan Unilever's market cap fell ₹12,089 crore to ₹5,04,998 crore. Larsen & Toubro dropped ₹11,040 crore to ₹5,42,938 crore. Tata Consultancy Services lost ₹8,575 crore, Bajaj Finance shed ₹7,814 crore, ICICI Bank edged down ₹6,315 crore and State Bank of India dipped ₹3,461 crore.
The BSE Sensex fell 194.52 points, or 0.25%, over the week. The NSE Nifty dropped 63.95 points, or 0.26%. Ajit Mishra, senior vice president of research at Religare Broking, said markets started the week on a positive note supported by easing crude prices and encouraging Q1 business updates. Sentiment weakened mid-week after escalating Iran–US tensions triggered a sharp sell-off. Benchmarks recovered part of the losses over the final two sessions, he added.
The week's moves were driven largely by external risk. Several traders said the market's direction now hinges on crude oil's next move. A further escalation in West Asia or a sustained spike in oil prices would pressure the broader market again. Crude oil remains the key variable for Indian equity valuations this month, with the country importing more than 80% of its needs.
