China Mandates Removal of Decentralized Messaging App Bitchat from Apple App Store

Apple has complied with a Chinese government order to remove Jack Dorsey’s decentralized messaging app, Bitchat, from its local App Store.

Chinese authorities have directed Apple to remove the decentralized messaging application Bitchat from its domestic App Store. The platform, which was co-founded by Jack Dorsey, utilizes peer-to-peer technology to facilitate communication.

Bitchat has gained significant traction globally as a communication tool for various protest movements. The application has been actively utilized by demonstrators in countries including Iran, Madagascar, and Nepal, who rely on its decentralized structure to maintain connectivity during periods of civil unrest.

Following the government mandate, the app is no longer accessible for download via Apple’s Chinese storefront. Neither Apple nor representatives for the messaging platform have provided detailed statements regarding the specific regulatory grounds for the removal, though the move aligns with Beijing's strict oversight of digital communication channels and foreign-developed software.
