Four of India's top ten companies lost Rs 87,960 crore in market value last week as the Sensex fell 0.6%. Bharti Airtel dropped the most, while LIC and Reliance gained.
Four of India's ten most valuable companies lost a combined Rs 87,960 crore in market capitalisation last week. Bharti Airtel took the biggest hit, its valuation dropping by Rs 28,053 crore to Rs 12,14,963 crore.
The BSE Sensex fell 468 points, or 0.6%, over the five sessions. The Nifty slipped 114 points, or 0.46%.
Tata Consultancy Services shed Rs 22,070 crore, ending the week at Rs 8,31,437 crore. State Bank of India lost Rs 20,861 crore, dropping to Rs 9,64,969 crore. Hindustan Unilever declined by Rs 16,976 crore, closing at Rs 4,73,913 crore.
Six of the top-10 firms gained. Life Insurance Corporation of India added Rs 12,650 crore, reaching Rs 5,35,980 crore. Reliance Industries rose Rs 8,120 crore to Rs 17,78,176 crore, retaining its position as the most valued company. Larsen & Toubro climbed Rs 3,488 crore to Rs 5,62,461 crore. Bajaj Finance edged up Rs 3,424 crore to Rs 6,80,622 crore. ICICI Bank added Rs 752 crore, taking its market cap to Rs 10,18,330 crore. HDFC Bank rose Rs 357 crore to Rs 11,21,159 crore.
"Indian equity markets ended the week on a cautious note, extending their recent corrective phase as elevated crude oil prices, rising global bond yields and persistent geopolitical uncertainty weighed on investor sentiment," said Ajit Mishra, SVP Research at Religare Broking.
The dispersion between losers and gainers reflects a sector rotation. Telecom and IT bore the brunt of the selloff, while insurance, energy, and infrastructure stocks attracted buying interest. Bharti Airtel's sharp decline may be tied to tariff clarity concerns in the telecom sector, traders said. TCS's drop mirrors global tech demand worries, particularly from U.S. clients. The fall in SBI and HUL came despite a broader rally in financials and consumer staples among peers, suggesting stock-specific factors, including margin pressure and valuation, played a role.
Reliance Industries remains the top firm by market value, followed by Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, TCS, Bajaj Finance, Larsen & Toubro, LIC, and Hindustan Unilever.
