AlphaScala Weekly: WTI craters 9.4%, gold sinks on Iran truce
Monday, June 15, 2026
Good morning,
The Iran ceasefire ripped the risk premium out of crude, sending WTI down 9.4% to $84.28 and gold off 2.7% to $4,215. Bitcoin took the other side, ticking up 0.8% to $63,571 after a $246M short squeeze, while the Nasdaq 100 led the index tape with a 0.7% gain. Small caps did the real work, with IWM up 3.1%. Microsoft's Satya Nadella warned that AI models soaking up corporate knowledge could hollow out enterprise software, and a 10-insider cluster bought TSM. Here's what mattered.
The Week That Was
Energy drove the week. WTI's 9.4% drop to $84.28 followed the U.S.-Iran ceasefire, which pulled the war premium out of both crude and gold; bullion slid 2.65% to $4,215. Equities shrugged it off and then some. IWM jumped 3.11%, the Nasdaq 100 added 0.73%, the S&P 500 inched up 0.33%, and the Dow gained 0.81%. Bitcoin closed up 0.81% to $63,571 after the ceasefire forced a $246 million short squeeze, outrunning gold and trailing the index rally.
Under the surface, positioning leaned constructive. AlphaScala's model put Grupo Cibest at the top with an 82 Alpha Score, ahead of Micron at 80 and Kinross at 79. Insiders bought into the slide: ten TSM insiders added shares over 30 days, four Nike insiders put in a net $2.17M, and three Simon Property names bought $139K worth. On the political tape, John McGuire bought META and Gilbert Cisneros picked up SoftBank just before the stock dropped 10% on a snag in its OpenAI loan.
FX stayed quiet against the energy fireworks. GBP/USD firmed 0.45% to 1.34 with a U.S. CPI print looming, GBP/JPY rose 0.54%, and EUR/USD ticked up 0.22% to 1.16. Nadella's comment on AI hollowing out enterprise software was the week's loudest single take, landing as the Nasdaq ground higher into a softer macro tape.
