Visa launched a contactless transit payment pilot across the Shenzhen Metro network, covering all 17 lines and 432 stations. International visitors with eligible chip cards or enabled mobile devices can tap at designated gates, bypassing ticket machines. The service also validates tickets for Business Class carriages on Line 11.
Shenzhen is the third Greater Bay Area city to support Visa transit payments, following Hong Kong and Guangzhou. The pilot arrives ahead of the APEC forum scheduled for November 2026 in Shenzhen, which is expected to draw more international arrivals.
"The introduction of Visa acceptance on the Shenzhen Metro brings a new level of convenience for international travellers and Hong Kong commuters," said Paulina Leong, General Manager of Visa Hong Kong and Macau. Leong said the service lets commuters use familiar payment methods without setting up local apps, bridging visitors with cities across the region.
A recent Visa study found that payment seamlessness is a major factor driving frequent travel between Hong Kong and mainland China. The company has already rolled out similar transit systems in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Guangzhou.
To push adoption among cross-border commuters, Visa is offering a cash rebate of up to 10% for eligible Hong Kong and Macau cardholders on overseas public transit networks through July 2026.
