Zelenskyy confirms talks ahead of NATO summit. Analysts see escalation risk after Ukraine hits Russian oil hub. Oil premium and defense stocks under watch.
Donald Trump spoke with Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy over the weekend. Ukrainian drones struck a major oil terminal in St. Petersburg and the Kronstadt Naval Base. Russia retaliated early Monday, hitting Kyiv with missiles and drones, killing 11 people. The developments shift the Russia-Ukraine war into a new phase, just as NATO leaders prepare to meet in Ankara.
Zelenskyy said Saturday that “there is a real prospect to put an end to this war, and America’s resolve is decisive.” He agreed with Trump to continue talks at the summit. The Kremlin confirmed Trump spoke with Putin for 90 minutes. Yury Ushakov, a Kremlin aide, described the conversation as “businesslike and very constructive.” He said Trump emphasized ending the conflict as soon as possible.
The Institute for the Study of War said Putin likely injected false narratives about advances in Donetsk to pressure the West. ISW analysts said “Putin and other Kremlin officials are likely purposefully injecting the false narratives … to convince the West to capitulate.”
For energy markets, the St. Petersburg oil terminal strike matters most. Russia’s fuel production has already been hit by earlier drone attacks, Putin acknowledged. The latest hit could cut exports further, traders said. Brent crude traded higher Monday morning.
Defense stocks remain in focus. Lockheed Martin and Rheinmetall have rallied on expectations of higher budgets. A concrete NATO spending pledge this week would confirm that trend. Exxon Mobil and Shell also gained Monday on the supply risk.
What would change the risk calculus? A ceasefire deal pushed by Trump would remove the war premium from oil and defense stocks. Continued escalation – especially strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid – would keep the premium elevated. The summit’s outcome provides the next catalyst.
The NATO summit runs Tuesday and Wednesday in Ankara. No ceasefire has been announced.
