The U.S. government on Friday granted Anthropic permission to release its Mythos 5 model to a group of roughly 100 companies and federal agencies, according to multiple media reports.
The decision ends a two-week standoff between the Trump administration and the artificial intelligence company over export controls. Anthropic said earlier this month it disabled access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models to comply with a directive from the Commerce Department that cited national security authorities. The company was told to suspend access by any foreign national, including its own foreign national employees.
Senior Anthropic staff flew to Washington to meet with administration officials. The company told CNBC earlier this month that both parties were working quickly to get the models back online. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reportedly wrote in a letter to Anthropic that the company had worked with the government to address risks associated with the covered models.
"We have worked diligently to ensure America remains the global leader in AI while safeguarding our security," a Commerce Department spokesperson said in a statement to Reuters and Semafor.
The release is limited to about 100 entities. Anthropic did not disclose which companies or agencies received access. The company said it would begin notifying approved users immediately.
The resolution removes a key uncertainty for Anthropic's customers and partners. The standoff had raised questions about how the Trump administration would balance national security concerns with the goal of maintaining U.S. leadership in frontier AI development. The case is one of the first high-profile tests of the administration's export control framework for advanced AI models.
Anthropic's models are considered among the most capable in the industry. The company has positioned itself as a safety-focused alternative to OpenAI and Google. The export control dispute highlighted the tension between keeping cutting-edge AI within the United States and the practical reality that many AI companies employ global talent.
The Commerce Department did not specify a timeline for broader release of the Mythos 5 model or for the Fable 5 model, which remains restricted. Anthropic representatives and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
