Grammy-nominated hip-hop producer Tay Keith was killed in Memphis on Sunday night. The 29-year-old, born Brytavious Lakeith Chamber, was ambushed shortly after posting an Instagram Live where he said, "I ain't scared of nobody. If it happen, it happen."
A video circulating on social media shows Keith moments before the attack. In it, he acknowledges the presence of weapons: "Everybody got weapons." The clip cuts out abruptly. Local authorities have not released details on a suspect or motive. Foul play has not been ruled out, according to preliminary reports.
Keith rose to prominence producing for BlocBoy JB, including the hit "Look Alive" featuring Drake. He also worked with Travis Scott, Lil Wayne, and Key Glock. His production style blended Memphis trap with melodic samples, earning him a Grammy nomination for his work on Drake's "Scorpion."
The music community reacted quickly. Rapper BlocBoy JB posted a tribute on Instagram: "Lost my brother. Can't believe this." Fellow Memphis producer DJ Paul wrote, "Another one gone too soon. Prayers for his family."
Keith's death adds to a string of violence affecting young hip-hop producers and artists in the South. Memphis has seen a rise in homicides among musicians in recent years. The industry has struggled to address security for talent outside of marquee events.
No arrests have been announced. The investigation is ongoing.
