Cecabank has launched a regulated cryptocurrency custody and trading service for financial institutions, bringing Renta 4 Banco onto the platform as the first client. The service operates under the European Union's MiCA rules, according to a Jun. 11 announcement.
The Spanish bank moved its crypto-asset project into production after securing authorization from the CNMV in July 2025. Cecabank is also registered with the Bank of Spain as a crypto-asset service provider and has started the European passporting process to extend the service to Ireland, Portugal, and Luxembourg.
The platform is a joint effort with crypto exchange Bit2Me. Cecabank holds the custody layer and compliance infrastructure, while Bit2Me handles trade execution, liquidity, and market access. The partnership dates to May 2024, when the two companies first disclosed plans for a MiCA-ready institutional offering that was awaiting regulatory sign-off.
Renta 4 Banco, a Spanish investment firm, will use the infrastructure to develop its own crypto trading offering for clients. The setup removes the need for smaller institutions to build exchange technology from scratch, Cecabank said.
Cecabank’s CNMV authorization covers crypto-asset custody and transfer services, along with the reception and transmission of orders. The bank plans to initially offer major cryptocurrencies and stablecoins designed to meet European regulatory standards.
Aurora Cuadros, Corporate Director of Securities Services at Cecabank, said the bank is taking a natural step by transferring its traditional custody experience to digital assets. Gabriel Ayala, Director of Banking Solutions at Bit2Me, said the launch consolidates a model of institutional-grade crypto infrastructure integrated into traditional banking workflows.
Spain’s banking sector has shown growing appetite for crypto services. BBVA already offers Bitcoin and Ethereum trading and custody directly, without relying on an external exchange layer. The Cecabank-Bit2Me partnership, the companies said, lets smaller institutions access crypto services through a setup already aligned with regulatory requirements.
