The rupee edged up 2 paise to 95.43 as the dollar slipped on a drop in US yields. FII outflows of Rs 510 crore and rising Brent crude, up to $87.21, kept gains in check.
The rupee opened at 95.39 and edged up 2 paise to 95.43 against the US dollar in early Friday trade. A weaker dollar overseas, down 0.08% on the index to 99.78, pushed the currency higher, forex traders said.
The move came after US Treasury yields fell and inflation data came in below expectations, dragging the dollar from recent highs, analysts said. Brent crude rose 0.16% to $87.21 a barrel, reversing a days-long decline as a West Asia ceasefire deal remained elusive.
Pressure on the rupee remained. Foreign institutional investors pulled Rs 510.69 crore out of domestic equities Thursday, exchange data showed. The Sensex fell 315.50 points, or 0.40%, to 77,764.46 in morning trade. The Nifty dropped 72.70 points, or 0.30%, to 24,321.95.
On Thursday the rupee had closed 12 paise lower at 95.45.
Analysts said the rupee's gains were capped by the FII outflow and the oil price rise. The pair has held within a narrow band this week, with the 95.50 level acting as resistance.
