I now go to a weekly game at a local tea shop. The group includes a retiree who has played for 40 years and a college student who joined last semester. Nobody checks their phone. The conversation drifts between hands – work, family, the weather – but the game is the anchor.

For someone who spends all day online, that anchor matters. The digital world rewards quick responses and volume. Mahjong rewards patience and pattern recognition. It is a different kind of engagement, and it is real.

The tea shop owner told me the Thursday night group has grown from four regulars to 18 in six months. He added a second table. The waitlist is three weeks long.

I do not know if the trend will hold. For now, I have a reason to leave the house, sit across a table from people I barely know, and learn something that no Google search will teach you.
