Apple is cutting roughly 200 roles across its Vision Pro and Siri teams, as well as the Intelligent Systems Experience organization that handles some AI features, Bloomberg reported Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.
About 100 positions are being eliminated from the Vision Pro group, and another 100 from the Siri and software teams, according to the report. The company is largely shutting down a team focused on gaming for the Vision Pro.
New roles will be created to support the AI-powered version of Siri, and additional positions will be added to the Intelligence Systems Experience team, the report said.
Apple said in a statement that it is realigning some teams to “deliver the best experiences for our users.” The company added: “While we will create new roles as part of this change, it will also impact a limited number of existing roles.”
The cuts come after a June report that Apple had dropped plans for a successor to the Vision Pro and would instead focus on smart glasses with broader market appeal. That report said incoming CEO John Ternus had signed off on the decision.
Early adopters of the $3,500 headset reported discomfort, headaches and eye strain, prompting some to return the device, according to a February 2024 report. Others said the device lacked productivity relative to its price.
Apple debuted its AI-powered Siri in June, showcasing a personal assistant that can answer questions from the web and pull information from messages, emails and photos.
The smart glasses, which Apple is prioritizing, will not support immersive video or games, the report said.
