Apollo Global Management said an attacker accessed its cloud platforms July 6-10, exposing names, Social Security numbers and contact info. The disclosure follows FBI and Google warnings about voice phishing targeting financial firms.
Apollo Global Management disclosed Friday that a social engineering attack gave an intruder access to its cloud platforms for several days, potentially exposing names, Social Security numbers and other personal data of clients and employees.
The unauthorized access occurred between July 6 and July 10 across some of Apollo's cloud systems, the company said in a breach notification filed with the California Department of Justice. The information at risk includes names, dates of birth, contact information, home addresses and Social Security numbers. Apollo said it has not found evidence that the stolen information has been publicly posted or used for identity theft or fraud.
"Similar to other financial services firms, Apollo recently experienced a social engineering incident," Matthew Breitfelder, global head of human capital at Apollo, wrote in the notification letter. "Upon detecting the incident, we promptly notified law enforcement, engaged leading outside cybersecurity and forensic experts, enhanced our security protocols and launched an investigation."
The disclosure aligns with a broader warning from Google's Threat Intelligence Group, which said Aug. 6 that a voice phishing campaign is targeting financial services, private equity and professional services firms. The campaign pursues compromises that lead to data theft extortion, Google said. Mandiant, another Google cybersecurity unit, said in June that data theft extortion groups are impersonating IT support staff to target professional and legal firms.
The FBI reported in May that a group called Silent Ransom Group has conducted data theft and extortion operations since at least 2022, posing as IT department employees since spring 2026. The FBI said these operations consistently target U.S. law firms and companies in insurance, finance and healthcare.
Apollo shares closed at a slight gain Friday. The stock carries an Alpha Score of 53 out of 100, a Mixed rating. The firm's stock page is available for APO stock page.
