1Password has built a browser integration that lets Anthropic's Claude use stored credentials without the model ever seeing them.
The tool, called 1Password for Claude, authorizes the AI agent to complete tasks like booking travel or pulling a Stripe revenue summary. The credentials stay inside 1Password's vault. Claude knows it used a login but never receives the password or one-time code, the company said in a Thursday release.
"That distinction is where trust in agents starts and the foundation we're building with Anthropic," Chief Technology Officer Nancy Wang said.
The integration is available now for 1Password users on Mac. The company plans to extend it to other browser-based agents and platforms, and to add support for payment cards and identity details.
The release comes as consumer surveys show a split on how much access to grant AI agents. A PYMNTS Intelligence report found 56% of consumers will let an agent search and compare products. Fewer than 40% will let one touch payment credentials.
"Still, most consumers say they would let agents make purchases for them if the right guardrails are in place," the report said.
1Password's approach addresses that trust gap by keeping the credential layer separate from the AI layer. The model executes the action without holding the sensitive data, which means a compromised model or memory leak does not expose the password.
Payment networks and providers are building similar tokenized solutions for AI environments, according to a separate PYMNTS report on agentic commerce. The goal across these efforts is the same: let AI systems transact without handling raw credentials.
