XLRI professor gets guard-of-honour farewell after 33 years

Professor Venugopal Pingali walked out of his classroom at Xavier School of Management (XLRI) Jamshedpur for the last time this week. Students and faculty stood on either side of the corridor, clapping and reaching out to shake his hand. Pingali carried a bouquet of flowers and appeared visibly moved by the gesture.
The scene, captured on video by professor Manish Singhal, spread quickly on LinkedIn. In his post, Singhal said the farewell marked Pingali's final session after a 33-year academic career. Singhal wrote that he learned only at the last moment that students, staff and faculty had gathered outside to see Pingali off.
Singhal recalled first meeting Pingali when he joined XLRI in 2006. Pingali was Dean (Academics) at the time. "Venugopal Sir was Dean (Academics) when I joined XLRI on 13th April 2006, and the welcome he extended has stayed with me for more than twenty years since," Singhal wrote. He described how Pingali accommodated his unfinished thesis and leave balance without hesitation.
"That accommodating nature, where individual circumstances were genuinely factored into administrative decisions, is what I remember most fondly," Singhal added.
