Tamil Nadu appoints film producer K Venkata Narayana as special representative in New Delhi, drawing opposition criticism over Karnataka ties and Mekedatu dam. Investors watch state policy stability.
The Tamil Nadu government appointed film producer K Venkata Narayana as the state's special representative in New Delhi on June 23. The temporary post carries a status equivalent to a minister. The order runs for one year, or until the government decides the post is no longer needed.
Narayana, a chartered accountant and law graduate, founded Bengaluru-based KVN Productions. He produced "Jana Nayagan," the last film of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. The movie remains unreleased due to certification issues.
Opposition parties immediately criticized the move. DMK leader Tiruchy Siva questioned whether Narayana would represent Tamil Nadu's stance on the Mekedatu dam dispute with Karnataka. The AIADMK called the administration a "proxy government" of the Congress-led Karnataka government. BJP state chief Nainar Nagenthran said Narayana does not speak Tamil and alleged close ties with Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.
The Mekedatu dam issue is a long-running water-sharing conflict over the Cauvery river. The Cauvery delta supports rice cultivation that feeds food-processing supply chains. Any settlement perceived as unfavorable could affect agricultural output and input costs for regional food processors.
Nagenthran asked: "How can someone who has no connection with Tamil Nadu be appointed to the important responsibility of acting as a bridge between the Central government and Tamil Nadu government?" He questioned whether the appointment resulted from Narayana's role as the chief minister's film producer or from pressure by the Congress party.
The government has not responded to the opposition's criticism. The appointment adds a layer of political uncertainty for a state that hosts major auto and electronics manufacturing clusters. The controversy unfolds as Tamil Nadu seeks central approvals for several infrastructure projects.
The government order states the appointment continues until the need for it ceases, whichever is earlier.
