Tamil Nadu set a credit outlay of ₹10.98 lakh crore for the 2026-27 fiscal year, a 12% increase over the previous year’s target. The state’s banking sector surpassed the FY26 target, lending ₹9.80 lakh crore against a goal of ₹9 lakh crore, hitting 109% of the plan, according to Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson at the 186th State Level Bankers’ Committee meeting.
Agriculture gets ₹6.5 lakh crore, MSMEs ₹3.97 lakh crore. The remainder covers other priority sectors. Wilson stressed educational loans as a channel for human capital investment.
Indian Overseas Bank, the SLBC convenor, hosted the meeting. Officials from the Reserve Bank of India, NABARD, and the state finance department were present.
The FY27 target of ₹10.98 lakh crore is 12% higher than the ₹9 lakh crore target set for FY26. Actual disbursement in FY26 was ₹9.80 lakh crore, or 109% of that target. If the sector matches its overperformance rate, actual credit could reach roughly ₹12 lakh crore by the end of FY27.
The agricultural component, at 59% of the total, typically involves Kisan Credit Cards, crop loans, and term loans for equipment. Banks with agri-focused branch networks, including Indian Overseas Bank and other public sector lenders with Tamil Nadu exposure, are natural beneficiaries. The MSME piece targets small businesses, often carrying lower risk weights and qualifying for refinance from SIDBI and NABARD.
The educational loan emphasis adds a retail lending component. The first quarterly review of FY27 disbursement is scheduled for July. That data will show whether the 12% growth target is on track.
