Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy has asked Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to open an urgent inquiry into allegations that 40 lakh tonnes of coal worth roughly ₹1,600 crore have disappeared from the Singareni Collieries Company (SCCL).
Reddy posted the request on X alongside a letter dated June 10. The letter cites media reports of irregularities and says the missing coal represents a significant financial loss to SCCL, which is already carrying over ₹51,500 crore in unpaid dues from the Telangana state government.
“Given the financial stress due to over ₹51,500 crore in outstanding dues from the Telangana government, any reported irregularities warrant a thorough investigation,” Reddy wrote. He asked the chief minister to ensure a prompt inquiry, strengthen safeguards where necessary, and secure the smooth operation of SCCL and the welfare of its workforce.
SCCL employs more than 40,000 people. The company is a joint venture between the Telangana government and the central government, with the state holding a majority stake. The unpaid dues have been a recurring point of tension between the two governments.
Last week, Bharat Rashtra Samithi working president K T Rama Rao also called for an investigation into the same allegations. He sent a letter to Reddy questioning how coal could disappear in large quantities without accountability.
Reddy’s letter to the chief minister suggested that the inquiry should assess whether adequate safeguards and internal controls exist at SCCL. He also recommended that the company consider using technology-based monitoring tools and periodic review mechanisms to catch weaknesses early.
“Such allegations, if not examined with alacrity and if not addressed promptly, may undermine SCCL’s financial position and impede its future growth and sustainability,” Reddy said.
The company has not issued a public statement on the allegations. The Telangana chief minister’s office has not responded to the letter publicly.
