West Marine is closing 59 stores across 23 states as it works through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filed last month. The Fort Lauderdale-based boating and fishing retailer submitted a list of locations it intends to shutter, part of a restructuring plan that aims to cut debt and improve its balance sheet.
The company said supply chain disruptions, extreme weather, and shifting consumer behavior pushed it into financial trouble. It has more than 200 retail locations across 34 states and Puerto Rico, so the closures represent roughly a quarter of its footprint.
"After productive discussions with key advisors, we've reached an agreement to pursue a strategic reorganization that will address our capital structure while maximizing value for all our stakeholders," West Marine said in a statement.
CEO Paulee Day added: "West Marine has been a trusted partner to the boating community for decades. The actions we are taking today will allow us to optimize our operations so that we can continue to serve our customers and community well into the future."
The company's restructuring website said it plans an expedited process and is considering emerging from Chapter 11 by mid-August. West Marine said it will remain open for business and that customers should not expect changes to day-to-day operations during the bankruptcy.
Stores are closing in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
The filing follows a wave of retail bankruptcies as smaller chains struggle with higher costs and a pullback in discretionary spending. West Marine's focus on boating and fishing gear – categories tied to seasonal and weather-dependent demand – made it especially vulnerable to the supply-chain and weather shocks it cited.
