Activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day indefinite hunger strike late Thursday after Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh met him at Medanta Hospital in Delhi. The government assured him it would address the core demands behind the protest.
Nadda, reading the government's commitments in the presence of Wangchuk's wife Gitanjali Angmo, said the administration would not register cases against peaceful protesters at Jantar Mantar or those who marched to Parliament on July 20. He also said the government was positively considering compensation for families of students who died by suicide after the NEET paper leaks.
Wangchuk announced the end of his fast on social media. "This was done after a long negotiation on various conditions and in view of possible violence in the country," he wrote. He said 65 members of parliament from different parties had visited or signed letters urging him to break the fast.
