More than 100,000 packages that could not be delivered through Vinted Go have found new owners through a pilot program that relists the items on the parent company's marketplace, the logistics subsidiary told Ecommerce News.
Vinted Go is a subsidiary of the Vinted Group, launched in 2022 to run a pan-European delivery network for secondhand items. Most packages reach their destination. A small fraction do not.
Vytautas Atkočaitis, CEO of Vinted Go, told Ecommerce News the undeliverable cases stem from uncollected parcels, damaged labels, failed return attempts, or operational issues. When things go wrong, both buyer and seller are protected. Buyers get refunds. Sellers receive compensation.
Last November, the company started a pilot called Rescued Value. Packages that cannot be delivered or returned are relisted on Vinted under a dedicated account with that name. The program covers France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Germany, Austria, and Luxembourg.
Most logistics companies dispose of undeliverable packages or sell them in bulk. Atkočaitis said Vinted Go wanted to explore other options. Some items go to charities. The Rescued Value program handles the rest.
"Giving these items a second life is more complicated and more expensive from an operational standpoint than traditional disposal methods," Atkočaitis said. Revenue from the Rescued Value account covers the costs of collecting, processing, and reselling the items.
The software built for the program also lets Vinted Go develop tools for charities to sell donated items at scale through Vinted. Atkočaitis said partner organizations have shown demand for that capability.
"Our priority will always be to successfully deliver packages to recipients or return them to sellers, and this initiative affects only a very small portion of our total package volume," he said. "We are testing whether we can offer an alternative solution to a common problem faced by carriers worldwide, thereby extending the lifespan of the items."
