Iran must open the Strait of Hormuz with no tolls, after which the US lifts its blockade and a UK-France demining coalition moves in. No India trade deal at G7.
Senior US officials said President Donald Trump is close to a deal with Iran that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz without tolls, followed by a multinational demining operation.
The officials, speaking to ANI, described the emerging agreement as "great" and "very strong." Iran must open the strait as a condition, they said, and the US would then lift its naval blockade. The two steps would happen in parallel.
"Iran is going to open up the Strait of Hormuz; that is a requirement. It could be open with no tolls. As they do that, we will lift our blockade," one official said.
After the strait reopens, a demining phase begins. The UK and France have already discussed a coalition, with some ships in the region. G7 countries have volunteered capacity, the officials said.
India Trade Deal Still in Technical Phase
The officials also addressed the US-India trade relationship ahead of Trump's meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 summit in Evian, France. No deal will be signed at the summit, they said. Further technical discussions remain.
"President Trump's approach is always that we won't have a deal unless it's a very good deal. We think a very good deal is possible. We will not close that deal at the G7," an official said.
A US team will travel to India the following week for more talks. The two countries signed a joint framework agreement earlier this year and have held intensive negotiations over the past year. The US has never had a trade deal with India.
"There are a lot of latest approaches to the economy in India that make it difficult for our companies to do business, so we are trying to work through some of those," the official said.
Trump's G7 Schedule: Bilateral Meetings and AI Push
Trump departs the White House early Monday morning after UFC Freedom 250, landing in Evian on Monday afternoon. His schedule includes a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday evening, followed by a working dinner with G7 leaders.
On Tuesday, Trump will join a working session with G7 leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He then holds bilateral meetings with the Emir of Qatar and the President of the United Arab Emirates. A working lunch with G7 leaders and Middle Eastern leaders follows, plus a session on international investment partnerships.
Tuesday evening features a social dinner and cultural performance. Wednesday morning includes another working session on economic growth, followed by bilaterals with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Indian Prime Minister Modi. A working lunch with G7 leaders, outreach partners, and global tech CEOs focuses on innovation and AI. Trump departs after dinner at the Palace of Versailles with Macron.
The officials said Trump will also work with G7 partners to boost critical mineral supply chain resilience, address illegal immigration, and promote AI adoption.
