Trump won't sign housing bill; law takes effect without his OK

President Donald Trump said Friday he will not sign a bipartisan housing bill Congress passed last month, objecting to Republicans' failure to pass a separate election measure.

The housing affordability bill, the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, becomes law automatically Saturday unless Trump vetoes it. The White House referred CNBC to Trump's Truth Social post saying he would not sign it, when asked whether he would veto.

Trump has pressed GOP allies to make the election bill, the SAVE America Act, the top legislative priority before the November midterms. The bill targets noncitizen voting in U.S. elections, which is already federally illegal and happens rarely.

Trump has previously said he would refuse to sign other bills until the election legislation becomes law. He canceled a scheduled signing ceremony for the housing bill last month on those grounds.
