President Donald Trump on Saturday sharply criticized U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro after her office dropped criminal charges against a former Olympian accused of damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, acknowledging the damage was caused by faulty construction, not vandalism.
Pirro's 20-page court filing Friday said newly obtained Interior Department documents showed the pool's liner peeled because of a botched installation and a rushed timeline ahead of the July 4 celebration. A visual inspection revealed damage across the pool, including areas prosecutors said a vandal would not likely reach.
Trump, in a social media post, said he disagrees "100%" with Pirro. He acknowledged "some contractor difficulty" but insisted the "major damage was caused by VANDALS!" He posted a security video showing people with their hands in the water, claiming they cut the lining with a knife. The footage, taken from a distance, does not clearly show vandalism, and workers nearby appear not to notice.
