TotalEnergies SE underperformed in the second quarter as weaker crude oil and natural gas prices reduced earnings expectations across the integrated energy sector, Antipodes Global Strategy said in its Q2 2026 investor letter. The fund cited easing geopolitical tensions, slowing global growth, softer fuel demand, and increased OPEC+ supply expectations as the main pressures on commodity markets.
Antipodes wrote:
TotalEnergies SE (NYSE:TTE) underperformed as weaker crude oil and natural gas prices reduced earnings expectations and cash-flow forecasts across the integrated energy sector in line with geopolitical tensions easing over the Quarter. Concerns over slowing global economic growth and softer fuel demand also weighed on commodity markets, while increased OPEC+ supply expectations added further pressure to oil prices. Although TotalEnergies continued to benefit from its diversified LNG, power and renewable energy portfolio, these positives were outweighed by declining upstream earnings expectations. A broader rotation away from defensive energy stocks toward higher-growth sectors and profit taking after a stronger period also contributed to weakness.
The letter came during a quarter when global equities surged 14.9% in U.S. dollar terms, driven by renewed enthusiasm for artificial intelligence, strong corporate earnings, and reduced tensions with Iran. Growth stocks outpaced value, and emerging markets led gains. That backdrop pushed money out of defensive sectors like energy into semiconductors and hardware, a shift Antipodes said hit TotalEnergies directly.
TotalEnergies closed at $85.83 on Aug. 7, 2026, giving it a market capitalization of $190.44 billion. The stock has gained 43% over the past 52 weeks and rose 7.49% in the month before that date. The longer-term run masks the second-quarter drag. Hedge funds increased their exposure during the period: 30 funds held TotalEnergies at the end of the first quarter, up from 26 in the previous quarter, according to Antipodes' data.
AlphaScala's proprietary model gives TotalEnergies an Alpha Score of 70 out of 100, with a Moderate label, reflecting a balanced risk-reward profile amid the sector headwinds. The stock page offers additional detail on the company's fundamentals and positioning.
The factors Antipodes described are interlinked. Easing geopolitical tensions with Iran reduced the risk premium in oil prices. Slower global economic growth, particularly in China and Europe, softened fuel demand. OPEC+'s decision to increase supply added a further layer of pressure. TotalEnergies' diversified portfolio – spanning LNG, power, and renewable energy – provided some buffer, but the fund said declining upstream earnings expectations outweighed those positives.
The rotation away from energy stocks toward growth sectors was not unique to TotalEnergies. The broader sector underperformed as investors chased AI-related gains. Profit taking after a strong run for energy stocks also amplified the move. Antipodes noted that the fund remains cautious on expensive memory companies despite AI demand, preferring infrastructure, specialty semiconductors, and resilient software.
For TotalEnergies, the key question for the second half of 2026 is whether oil prices can stabilize. OPEC+'s production decisions, the trajectory of global demand, and any shifts in geopolitical risk will determine the earnings outlook. The company's LNG and renewables businesses could provide more support if commodity prices remain under pressure, but Antipodes' letter suggests the near-term headwinds from upstream earnings and sector rotation are likely to persist.
