Tokio Marine Kiln has made Alex Barnes the permanent head of its Marine & Energy department. Barnes had led the unit on an interim basis since January 2026 and now takes the role with immediate effect.
She brings more than 28 years of underwriting experience. Barnes joined TMK in November 2024 after 21 years at Beazley, where she built underwriting capability across the energy division's portfolio management, client servicing and technical underwriting.
The appointment signals the next stage of TMK's investment in the Marine & Energy portfolio. The firm plans further senior hires in the coming months as it pushes to grow its market presence across marine and energy lines.
Vivek Syal, TMK's chief underwriting officer, said Barnes brings deep technical expertise and a strong track record. "We take a long-term view of this business, and we are investing in the talent and capabilities needed to deliver on that," he said.
Barnes said the team is building a strong operational foundation and strengthening its leadership. "There is real appetite across the business to grow our capabilities here, and I am looking forward to delivering on that over the coming months and years," she said.
Tobin Ryan, head of claims at TMK, said the firm has been investing in claims capability alongside the underwriting team. Barnes's appointment gives the unit an integrated leadership structure to deliver end-to-end service for clients, he said.
