Two Texas brothers pleaded guilty to kidnapping a Minnesota family and stealing $8M in crypto. Crypto kidnappings rose 75% in 2025, with 41 cases already in France this year.
Two Texas brothers have pleaded guilty to federal charges for kidnapping a Minnesota family and stealing more than $8 million in cryptocurrency, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Minnesota said Thursday.
Isiah Angelo Garcia and Raymond Christian Garcia entered the pleas to Interference with Commerce by Robbery, a charge carrying up to 20 years in prison. U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen said the pleas hold the defendants accountable for what he called an armed robbery.
Court filings cited by prosecutors state the brothers traveled from Texas to Minnesota on Sept. 19, 2025. The victim, his wife, and their son were confronted at gunpoint. The wife and son were held for about nine hours at the family home while the victim was taken to a cabin three hours away, where he was forced to transfer roughly $8 million in cryptocurrency from online accounts and hardware wallets, prosecutors said.
The kidnapping unraveled after the victim's son managed to call emergency services. Washington County sheriff's deputies recovered a rifle and a shotgun. Surveillance footage and other evidence linked the brothers to the crime, according to prosecutors. Both men admitted in their plea agreements that firearms were used to threaten the victims. They also agreed to pay more than $8 million in restitution. Sentencing dates have not been set.
The case adds to a growing number of physical attacks targeting cryptocurrency holders. Security firm CertiK reported in February that crypto-related kidnappings and assaults increased 75% in 2025 from the prior year. The firm estimated losses from such attacks reached $101 million in the first four months of 2026 alone.
Earlier this month, Saif Faiq pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge in Connecticut for plotting to kidnap the parents of a crypto millionaire tied to the theft of about 4,100 Bitcoin. In May, the wife of The Sandbox co-founder Sebastien Borget survived an attempted kidnapping at the couple's home in Villenoy, France, after neighbors interrupted the attack.
French authorities have introduced new prevention measures as crypto kidnappings climb. Speaking at Paris Blockchain Week in April, Interior Minister Jean-Didier Berger said a government prevention platform had attracted thousands of sign-ups. He noted 41 cryptocurrency-linked kidnapping cases had been recorded across France in the first four months of 2026, roughly one every 2.5 days.
Authorities in other countries have also stepped up enforcement. FBI Director Patel Vows to Hunt Crypto ‘Pig Butchering' Scammers in a recent statement, signaling the U.S. government's focus on crypto-related crime.
