Tanium brings back cofounder Orion Hindawi as CEO and cuts 35 R&D jobs. The $9 billion cybersecurity firm faces AI pressure and an uncertain IPO path.
Tanium is swapping CEOs again. The $9 billion cybersecurity company brought back cofounder Orion Hindawi as chief executive, replacing Dan Streetman after less than four years in the role. Hindawi's father and fellow cofounder David Hindawi returns as chair. Streetman leaves the board.
Orion Hindawi had run the company for more than 15 years before Streetman took over in 2021. The change comes as Tanium, like many software-as-a-service firms, faces pressure from AI reshaping how businesses buy enterprise software. Tanium said it plans to expand its AI offerings and autonomous capabilities.
Last week the company cut roughly 35 employees, mostly in research and development, according to a person familiar with the matter. A corporate fact sheet listed headcount at 1,900 as of 2025.
"AI has made what we do more critical than ever," Orion Hindawi said in a statement. "Tanium is the platform every organization will rely on as threats grow more sophisticated and the pace of change intensifies."
The leadership shake-up follows several executive departures this year, Business Insider previously reported. Tanium has stayed private since its founding in 2007. It was last valued at $9 billion in 2020.
Tanium hired chief financial officer Marc Levine in 2021 to conduct a "readiness assessment" for an initial public offering. Several employees and executives had left in the past few years due to uncertainty about whether the company would ever go public, Business Insider reported.
Last year, Tanium tightened its return-to-office policy by withholding some equity grants from employees who did not comply, according to the same report.
The CEO swap and the R&D cuts suggest Tanium is retrenching around its founders as it tries to adapt to AI competition. The company has not set a new timeline for an IPO. Levine's readiness assessment, conducted four years ago, never led to a public listing.
