A cyclonic system is set to bring rain and thunderstorms to northern and delta districts of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, threatening standing rice crops in key growing areas.
An upper air cyclonic circulation over north coastal Tamil Nadu will bring rain to 10 northern districts of the state on Sunday, the Regional Meteorological Centre said. Moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning is expected over Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Tiruvannamalai, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Villupuram and Kallakurichi districts and Puducherry.
Heavy rain with gusty winds of 40-50 kmph is predicted for delta districts such as Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai, and the Karaikal area. Nalumukku in Tirunelveli recorded the most rainfall – seven cm in the previous 24 hours – while Madurai recorded the state's highest temperature at 40 degrees Celsius.
The timing matters for agriculture. Delta districts form the heart of Tamil Nadu's paddy belt, where the current samba crop is in its late maturation phase. Heavy rain and strong winds can lodge the grain, lowering yields and delaying harvest. That would tighten supplies of paddy to millers and raise rice prices, which are already elevated after two years of monsoon variability.
The high temperature in Madurai may also stress other crops, including vegetables and sugarcane. Traders and millers in the Cauvery delta will watch the Sunday rainfall closely; any exceedance of the forecast levels could force a reassessment of near-term paddy arrivals.
For Chennai, the weather department forecast partially cloudy skies on Sunday with moderate rain and thunderstorms likely.
