Surge Copper Corp. said it will nominate three new directors at its September annual meeting, part of a planned board renewal after completing a pre-feasibility study on the Berg Copper Project.
The slate includes Tony Scott, chief business development officer of Artemis Gold Inc. The other two nominees are Nalaine Morin, senior vice president of environment and social affairs at Skeena Gold + Silver, and David Farrell, an independent director of Fortuna Mining Corp. Current directors Patrick Glazier, Jim Pettit, and John Dorward will not stand for re-election at the Sept. 29 meeting.
Scott brings more than 25 years in mining, including senior roles at Gatos Silver, where he worked on the company's strategic planning before its roughly US$970 million acquisition. His earlier career includes stints at Macquarie Group's metals and energy group and at Teck Resources Ltd.. He holds a mining geology degree from Curtin University.
Morin, a certified environmental professional, previously served as lands director for the Tahltan Central Government. She has managed environmental reviews of major resource projects on behalf of Indigenous nations and sits on the board of BC Hydro. Farrell has structured more than US$25 billion in mining mergers, acquisitions and financing. He chairs Fortuna's compensation and governance committees and founded Davisa Consulting, a mining advisory firm.
"The recruitment of Tony, Nalaine and David reflects both the progress Surge has made and the increasingly significant opportunity ahead," chair Christian Kargl-Simard said in a statement. CEO Leif Nilsson called the three nominees "a strong endorsement of the quality and potential of the Berg Copper Project."
The Berg deposit hosts a large copper-molybdenum-silver resource in central British Columbia. A pre-feasibility study and mineral reserve estimate have established a development pathway for a long-life operation with by-product gold. Surge also controls the Ootsa property adjacent to the past-producing Huckleberry Mine. The company plans to advance the project through environmental assessment, permitting and project finance.
The new board members bring expertise directly relevant to those stages. Morin's experience with the Tahltan Central Government positions her to lead engagement on the Berg project, which lies in Tahltan territory. Farrell's structured-finance background matches the capital needs of a large copper mine. Scott's work at Artemis Gold, which is building the Blackwater gold project in British Columbia, gives him hands-on development experience.
Kargl-Simard thanked the outgoing directors for their contributions. Each will serve until the meeting concludes. The company will file its meeting materials on SEDAR+ ahead of the September vote.
