The fintech company's acquisition of the AI model router comes three months after OpenRouter's $113M round at a $1.3B valuation.

Stripe said Wednesday it plans to acquire OpenRouter, a startup that gives developers access to dozens of artificial intelligence models. Terms were not disclosed. The New York Times, citing a person familiar with the matter, said the price is about $7.5 billion, with $1.5 billion allocated to OpenRouter's founders.
Less than three months ago OpenRouter raised $113 million at a valuation of roughly $1.3 billion. The jump to $7.5 billion highlights how quickly AI infrastructure assets are becoming strategic for payments companies.
OpenRouter operates a marketplace where developers can route requests to various AI models. Many of those models are open-weight, meaning they are available for free and often come from Chinese labs like DeepSeek and Z.ai. These models tend to be cheaper than proprietary ones from OpenAI and Anthropic, which has attracted developers looking to control costs.
Stripe has been moving into AI-related services. In a blog post about the deal, the company said it has been working with clients to "optimize their token costs and route tokens efficiently," referring to the units that measure AI model usage. Stripe noted that managing AI costs relative to performance is difficult because of the "pace at which models are released and repriced."
Stripe itself is one of the most valuable private companies in the world, with a valuation near $160 billion from earlier this year. Its core payments technology is widely used across e-commerce and subscription services. Last year it expanded into crypto with the $1.1 billion acquisition of Stablecoin platform Bridge.
The AI market offers a much larger and faster-growing opportunity for payments and infrastructure services. Stripe CEO Patrick Collison said in a statement: "Stripe is building the economic infrastructure for AI, and together with OpenRouter we'll help businesses maximize profitability by routing their requests intelligently and spending their tokens efficiently."
OpenRouter said in a separate blog post that combining with Stripe will support its vision of "a healthy AI ecosystem where many models thrive, where AI neurodiversity is a strength, where a lab or an inference provider with a breakthrough can reach millions of developers, and where no single model becomes the default by inertia."
The deal is expected to close in the second half of the year, pending regulatory reviews.
