
Coinbase's x402 protocol processed $50M in AI agent payments, mostly in USDC. Mastercard, Visa, Cloudflare build infrastructure for machine-to-machine transactions.
Autonomous software programs known as AI agents have begun executing financial transactions independently. These digital entities purchase computational resources, datasets, and software services without requiring manual human approval for each transaction. The payments are flowing through crypto rails, and the volume is already material.
Coinbase developed a specialized payment protocol called x402 that functions as an automated paywall for software interactions. An agent submits a service request, receives pricing information, executes payment, and obtains the requested resource – all without traditional account setup or payment credential input. According to Coinbase’s disclosed metrics, x402 has handled over 165 million individual transactions representing a cumulative value exceeding $50 million. USDC, a fiat-collateralized stablecoin, accounts for roughly 99% of this transaction volume.
Lincoln Murr, who leads AI product development at Coinbase, said average transaction values hover around 30 cents. The majority of these payments flow toward API endpoints – interfaces enabling software-to-software communication and service requests.
Stablecoins present advantages for this application. They operate continuously without downtime, facilitate borderless transactions, and circumvent the 2% to 4% processing fees inherent to traditional card-based payment systems. For sub-dollar transactions, conventional payment rails become economically prohibitive due to these fee structures.
Cloudflare is developing its own wallet infrastructure tailored for AI agents. The company said stablecoins align perfectly with the high-frequency, low-value transaction patterns characteristic of agent-initiated payments. Cloudflare’s forthcoming solution would function similarly to corporate payment cards, enabling operators to establish spending limits and whitelist approved vendors before agents execute any transactions.
Circle is experimenting with rapid USDC microtransactions that achieve immediate confirmation while deferring blockchain settlement to batch processing. MoonPay introduced PayBox, a solution integrating with AI assistants that enables agents to transact using either traditional card networks or cryptocurrency based on merchant acceptance.
Mastercard is actively positioning itself in this emerging market. The payment giant is piloting Agent Pay for Machines, a digital voucher-based architecture. Under this model, the agent’s operator establishes purchasing parameters and spending thresholds. Merchants validate these permissions, fulfill service requests, and later redeem payment vouchers. Mastercard said merchants retain flexibility to settle in either traditional fiat currency or stablecoins, eliminating the requirement for payment method alignment between transaction parties. The solution remains in limited early access, and Mastercard has yet to publish performance metrics. Mastercard, which holds an AlphaScala score of 65, is also testing single-audit stablecoin compliance with Borderless.xyz.
Visa collaborated with DBS Bank on a February pilot program where an autonomous agent purchased food and beverages using traditional credit infrastructure. The partners are now exploring extensions into e-commerce and travel reservation applications.
For perspective on scale, x402 processed approximately $24 million throughout a 30-day period in July. Visa’s network handles equivalent volume in approximately 60 seconds. Cloudflare’s agent wallet system remains under development. Some portion of Coinbase’s reported transaction count likely represents testing activity rather than genuine commercial exchange, Murr acknowledged.
Initial wallet funding represents a persistent friction point. Coinbase is working on functionality that would enable agents to autonomously initialize their own wallets upon receiving appropriate instructions. Murr drew parallels between the current landscape and the early peer-to-peer file-sharing era exemplified by Napster and LimeWire. The underlying technology demonstrates viability, but regulatory frameworks and market maturity remain underdeveloped.
