S&P 500 gains 1% for the week as the market shifts focus to a deluge of earnings: six big banks Tuesday, J&J Wednesday, Netflix and TSMC on Thursday.
Stocks rose Friday, with the S&P 500 up more than 1% for the week and the Nasdaq adding over 1.5%. The market recovered from a brief midday dip after President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social about Iran, saying the ceasefire is over but talks would continue.
The week ahead brings an unusually dense earnings calendar. Six of the largest U.S. banks report Tuesday before the open: JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo. Goldman's results will depend on how record capital markets activity translates into revenue, with the investment banking backlog as a key metric, CNBC reported. Wells Fargo enters with low expectations after two consecutive disappointing quarters, according to the CNBC report.
Wednesday adds Johnson & Johnson, which raised its full-year guidance in April and may do so again. The same day brings Morgan Stanley, BlackRock, PNC Financial, Bank of New York Mellon, ASML, Conagra, and Cintas. After the close, United Airlines and J.B. Hunt report.
Thursday is heavier. UnitedHealth, GE Aerospace, Abbott Labs, and Prologis report before the open. Taiwan Semiconductor reports in the same session; its sales growth and capex guidance could ripple through the chip sector, according to CNBC. Netflix reports after the close.
The sector action this week reflected the rotation ahead of earnings. Tech, energy, communication services, and consumer discretionary posted gains. Healthcare was the worst performer as defensive names lost ground. Materials, consumer staples, utilities, real estate, and industrials slipped. Financials edged lower but remained the top sector month-to-date.
Trading volume may pick up next week as the flood of earnings hits. The S&P 500 ended Friday up about 1.1% for the week, while the Nasdaq Composite gained roughly 1.6%.
