TMC MP Shatrughan Sinha rejects reports he joined a rebel group, saying Mamata Banerjee stood by him in tough times and he won't abandon her now.
Shatrughan Sinha, the actor-turned-politician and Trinamool Congress MP from Asansol, said Thursday he would not leave Mamata Banerjee even in difficult times. The statement pushed back against speculation that he had joined a rebel faction within the party.
"For the past few days, there has been a lot of speculation about me. Some people are speaking the truth, while others are spreading rumours," Sinha told PTI. "Some have claimed that I have joined the so-called rebel group. Yes, by nature, I have always been outspoken. I often say that if speaking the truth is considered rebellion, then I am also a rebel."
Sinha said Banerjee supported him during his own challenging period. "Mamata ji stood by me during my difficult times, and today, in her difficult phase, I cannot abandon her," he said. He added that he was elected on the TMC symbol – the "Jora Phool" – twice and described it as his duty to stand with the party.
Sinha also stressed that Banerjee remains a resilient leader who still commands a 41% vote share in West Bengal despite the party's defeat in the recent assembly elections. He said he works for all people in Bengal regardless of political affiliation or whether they voted for him.
The internal cracks
The TMC is facing growing internal turmoil. Multiple high-profile resignations have occurred, including Rajya Sabha MP Prakash Chik Baraik, amid rising dissent and speculation of a split under the anti-defection law. Rebel TMC MPs would need a merger where at least two-thirds of the entire party moves to another political entity to avoid disqualification – not just a bloc of MPs.
Kalyan Banerjee has issued an ultimatum over disagreements with Abhishek Banerjee's leadership, demanding that Mamata choose between him and her nephew to address the internal crises. Abhishek Banerjee held a nearly 90-minute meeting with Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss opposition unity and the future of the INDIA bloc. The meeting came a day after Mamata Banerjee met Sonia Gandhi. TMC leaders said these discussions were part of ongoing consultations among the India bloc allies following the opposition meeting held in the national capital on Monday.
