Sensex climbs 202 points, Nifty up 55 as HDFC Bank and Infosys lead gains. Brent crude holds above $93 as Middle East tensions keep risk appetite in check.
Indian benchmark equity indices rose in early Monday trade, with buying in blue-chip stocks like HDFC Bank and Infosys outweighing pressure from elevated crude oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty.
The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 202.42 points to 77,744.15. The 50-share NSE Nifty gained 55.35 points to 24,309.
Infosys, HCL Tech, Tata Steel, Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services, and HDFC Bank were among the top gainers on the Sensex. Asian Paints, Titan, Power Grid, and Bharat Electronics lagged.
Brent crude traded 1.32% lower at $93.14 a barrel. That slight pullback did little to ease a broader market mood shaped by the Middle East, said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, an online trading and wealth-tech firm.
"Iran has warned of retaliation against countries participating in the US 'economic war', reinforcing concerns that the confrontation could deepen rather than ease in the near term," Ponmudi said. "For Indian investors, the prolonged US-Iran standoff and its implications for energy prices remain a key source of uncertainty."
In Asian markets, South Korea's Kospi, Japan's Nikkei 225, Shanghai's SSE Composite index, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index were all trading lower.
Foreign institutional investors offloaded equities worth Rs 542.71 crore on Friday, exchange data showed.
HDFC Bank carries an Alpha Score of 41 out of 100, flagged as Mixed. Infosys scores 57, labelled Moderate.
