The Saudi Power Procurement Co., known as Principal Buyer, signed four agreements for battery energy storage projects with a combined capacity of 2,000 MW for four hours. The investments total more than SAR 4.35 billion ($1.16 billion), according to a ministerial statement.
Three of the projects are in Makkah and Hail. Each has a capacity of 500 MW for four hours. The Muwayh, Haden, and Al Kahfah projects were awarded to a consortium of Saudi Energy Co., ACWA Power Co., and Al Sharif Contracting Co. The fourth project, Al Khushaybi in Qassim, also 500 MW for four hours, went to a consortium led by ENGIE and Haj Abdullah Ali Reda and Partners Co. Ltd.
The projects fall under a build-own-operate model, meaning the consortia will build, own, and operate the storage systems and sell the services to Principal Buyer. The ministry oversees the program as part of Saudi Arabia's effort to bring renewable energy and storage to roughly 50% of the energy mix by 2030.
For ACWA Power, the contracts add a new revenue stream. The company already operates some of the world's largest solar and wind farms in the kingdom. Storage complements those assets by smoothing intermittent generation. For ENGIE, the deal expands its footprint in the Middle East beyond gas and desalination.
The 2 GW of storage capacity represents roughly 8 GWh of energy, enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes for four hours during peak demand. The cost of about $1.16 billion works out to roughly $580 per kilowatt-hour of capacity, a level that reflects the falling price of lithium-ion batteries globally.
Principal Buyer handles the tendering, power purchase agreements, and storage service agreements for the developers. The company said the first batch of projects will improve grid reliability and operational flexibility while supporting electricity supply security.
