CHART's 2026 Commitment to People Award honors Salamander CEO Sheila Johnson for a people-first culture with expanded benefits and community programs. Presented July 28 in Boston.
CHART, the Council of Hotel and Restaurant Trainers, awarded its 2026 Commitment to People Award to Sheila Johnson, founder and CEO of Salamander Collection. The award will be presented July 28 in Boston during the group's Hospitality Training Conference.
CHART President Kelly McCutcheon, who is also group director of training at Whataburger, said Johnson exemplifies what it means to break barriers and create pathways. "Her leadership is grounded in the belief that every person deserves to feel valued, respected, and empowered to grow," McCutcheon said in a statement. Through her commitment to developing people and strengthening communities, Johnson built a culture that reflects the spirit of the award, he added.
Johnson's nomination materials described a leadership style built on respect and authenticity. She remains engaged with associates through property visits, town halls, and personal interactions. Under her leadership, Salamander expanded learning resources and management training while enhancing parental leave and vacation benefits. The company also created career advancement pathways.
"I have believed that people are the foundation of every successful organization," Johnson said upon learning of the recognition. "Creating opportunities for others to learn, grow, and achieve their potential has always been one of the most rewarding aspects of leadership." She credited the service professionals and leaders at Salamander who bring the company's vision to life.
The Commitment to People Award, established in 1993, is given annually to a hospitality CEO or president who shows outstanding dedication to employee growth and development. A selection committee reviews nominees across four categories. Johnson's combination of business success and genuine focus on people helped establish Salamander as one of the industry's most respected luxury brands, according to CHART.
Johnson's community engagement extends beyond her hotels. She supports educational initiatives and workforce development in Jamaica and created opportunities for hospitality professionals of color through the Family Reunion event. The Sheila C. Johnson Design Center funds economic advancement and education for underserved populations.
The award dinner takes place Tuesday, July 28, in Boston.
