SAL Opens Amsterdam Holding Unit for Ground Handling Growth

SAL Saudi Logistics Services Co. set up a wholly owned subsidiary in Amsterdam, the company said Monday.

SAL International Ground Handling B.V. will act as an international holding company, a structure designed to support the Saudi logistics firm's push into global aviation services. The Netherlands unit sits under SAL's existing international ground operations segment.

The move comes as SAL, formerly known as Saudi Airlines Cargo Co., broadens its footprint beyond the domestic market. The company has been adding stations and partnerships in Europe and Asia as Gulf-based logistics providers compete for a larger share of the airfreight market, which has tightened on capacity constraints and shifting trade routes.

SAL did not disclose the investment size or a timeline for the Amsterdam unit's operational start. The company said the subsidiary will pursue acquisitions and partnerships in international ground handling.

Ground handling covers baggage, cargo, ramp services, and aircraft cleaning at airports. Airlines and airports typically outsource these functions, creating a recurring revenue stream for companies like SAL. The holding company structure lets the parent centralize financing and legal oversight for overseas operations without registering separate entities in each country from the start.

SAL trades on the Saudi stock exchange. The stock has gained roughly 8% this year, partly on expectations that the company will win more contracts tied to Saudi Arabia's aviation strategy, which targets 330 million passengers annually by 2030. The Amsterdam unit opens a second front: European airlines seeking handling partners with Gulf-scale experience.
