Reigns beats Rollins, Owens returns at WWE SummerSlam

Roman Reigns put an end to his feud with Seth Rollins in the main event of WWE SummerSlam on Sunday, retaining the World Heavyweight Championship in a match that leaned heavily on the pair's history as members of The Shield.

Reigns dodged a top-rope Stomp and hit three Spears for the pin. After the bell, the two men performed the Shield fist bump in the center of the ring. The gesture, a callback to their time alongside Dean Ambrose (now Jon Moxley in AEW), signaled the end of a rivalry that has stretched across years and multiple title changes.

Kevin Owens returned from a year-long injury layoff during the No. 1 contender's match between Sami Zayn and Finn Balor. SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis turned the bout into a Fatal 4-Way, adding Owens and Gunther. Owens cleared the ring and brawled with Zayn before winning with multiple Stunners. The victory earns him a shot at CM Punk's Undisputed WWE Championship.

Chelsea Green won the biggest match of her career, climbing a ladder to become the Interim WWE Women's Champion. She defeated Charlotte Flair, Tiffany Stratton, Jade Cargill and Lash Legend. The interim title was created because champion Rhea Ripley is injured; the two will meet later to unify the belts.

Other results from Sunday: Baron Corbin defeated Trick Williams for the United States Championship, Danhausen beat Dominik Mysterio in a Human Monies on a Pole match, and Chad Gable took the Intercontinental Championship from Penta.

Saturday's SummerSlam card featured CM Punk's successful defense of the Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes. The match ended when Randy Orton returned and hit Rhodes with an RKO. Orton and Rhodes have a long-running feud; Orton's return sets up a potential program between the two.

In the main event on Saturday, Oba Femi defeated Brock Lesnar inside Hell in a Cell. Lesnar ripped up the ring canvas to expose the wooden boards underneath, then hit a Tombstone onto the exposed wood, a move that paid homage to his old rival The Undertaker. Femi survived the attack and hit a Fall from Grace to win. Lesnar raised Femi's hand afterward, calling himself the past and Femi the future. The gesture positions Femi as a top star in the company.

Also Saturday, Liv Morgan retained her Women's World Championship against Iyo Sky with help from her Judgement Day teammates Roxanne Perez and Raquel Rodriguez. The Bella Twins and Paige lost to Fatal Influence. Nikki Bella, frustrated, attacked Paige after the match alongside her sister Brie.

The event set up new storylines heading into the next WWE pay-per-view. Owens will challenge Punk, Green awaits Ripley's return, and Femi's win over Lesnar positions him as a top star. The company now has several months of programming to build toward those matches.
