Reid Hoffman on Why 'The Startup of You' Still Matters a Decade Later

Reid Hoffman and Ben Casnocha released a 10th anniversary edition of their career guide The Startup of You this week. The original 2012 book argued that professionals should treat their careers like startups: invest in competitive advantage, build a network, and take calculated risks. The new edition updates that framework for a post-pandemic economy where remote work, gig platforms, and AI tools have reshaped how people build careers.

Hoffman, the LinkedIn co-founder, said the book's emotional resonance comes from the questions it tackles. "What should I do with my life? What type of career should I build? How do I balance competing motivations?" he wrote in a post announcing the release. The revised edition adds advice on navigating the shift to hybrid work, managing career risk in a more volatile labor market, and using digital networks to create opportunities.

The original book sold more than 200,000 copies and was translated into 15 languages. Its core thesis – that professionals should think of themselves as entrepreneurs of their own careers – has been adopted by business schools and career coaches. The new edition includes case studies from the pandemic era, including how some workers used the disruption to pivot industries or start side businesses.

Hoffman said he plans to write more about specific additions in the coming weeks. The book is available from Amazon and other retailers.
