Redwire shares rose sharply Monday after the company won a contract to supply Penguin Mk2.5 vertical takeoff and landing drones to the Taiwan Coast Guard.
The stock gained 12% in afternoon trading, its biggest single-day jump in six months. Redwire announced the deal in a press release but did not disclose the contract value or delivery timeline.
The Penguin Mk2.5 is a VTOL drone designed for maritime surveillance, search-and-rescue and border patrol. Redwire has marketed the system to coast guards and navies in the Asia-Pacific region for several years.
Taiwan is modernizing its coastal surveillance capacity as Chinese military activity around the island increases. The Taiwan Coast Guard operates under the Ocean Affairs Council and has been adding unmanned aircraft to monitor fishing zones, illegal immigration and naval movements.
Redwire, based in Melbourne, Florida, generates most of its revenue from space hardware and defense electronics. The drone segment is smaller but has grown as the Pentagon and allied forces seek cheaper alternatives to manned aircraft for long-duration patrols.
This is not Redwire's first Taiwan-related contract. The company previously supplied satellite components to Taiwan's space agency and provided avionics for a domestic satellite program.
Analysts at two firms that cover Redwire issued brief notes Monday noting the deal expands the company's footprint in Indo-Pacific defense markets. Cowen & Co. called the win a signal that maritime drone demand is broadening beyond the U.S. Navy.
The Penguin Mk2.5 competes with VTOL systems from AeroVironment and Shield AI. Redwire's variant uses a hybrid-electric powertrain and can stay airborne for up to 14 hours with a 30-pound payload.
Trading volume on the New York Stock Exchange was more than triple the 30-day average. Short interest in Redwire stands at about 8% of the float, according to data from S3 Partners.
The company reports fourth-quarter earnings on Feb. 27. Management previously guided for revenue between $310 million and $325 million for the full year.
