ReconAfrica produced natural gas to surface from three zones in the Elandshoek formation at its Kavango West 1X well in Namibia, the company said Thursday. It is the first hydrocarbon flow ever recorded from onshore Namibia.
The Calgary-based explorer, partnered with BW Energy (20% working interest) and state-owned NAMCOR (10% carried), began testing on June 8. The three lowest zones in the Elandshoek all flowed gas on separate tests. The company collected samples for compositional analysis, with results expected in weeks from labs in the United States.
Now the rig is moving up hole to test the shallower Huttenberg formation, where three identified zones hold 76 net metres of hydrocarbon pay across a 182-metre reservoir section. Each zone could take about 10 days to test. Management expects the next production update around late August.
The Elandshoek formation contains naturally fractured carbonate rock. The company now believes those fractures can support production. President and CEO Brian Reinsborough said:
"We are very excited to have produced hydrocarbons to surface on the Kavango West production test, which are the first hydrocarbons ever produced to surface onshore Namibia. Knowing that the Elandshoek formation had naturally fractured carbonate rocks, we are pleased to learn that those fractures support production."
Reinsborough added that the operations team is evaluating a horizontal or deviated sidetrack from the existing wellbore to intersect a larger reservoir interval and more of the natural fracture network. Based on analogue reservoirs globally, he said, such a sidetrack could lift productivity significantly.
ReconAfrica holds exploration licences covering around 13 million contiguous acres across the Damara Fold Belt and Kavango Rift Basin in northeastern Namibia, southeastern Angola and northwestern Botswana. It also operates the Ngulu block in shallow water offshore central Gabon.
The Kavango West 1X discovery well is being watched closely because onshore Namibia has never produced oil or gas commercially. The Huttenberg test results, due by late August, will tell investors whether the well has the flow rates to justify further development.
