RANK ETF's July winners included Corpay, Amazon and Baker Hughes, with gains of 14.65%, 13.95% and 9% respectively. The dual-filter strategy screens for analyst buy ratings and price momentum.
The Defiance KSM TipRanks Analyst ETF (RANK) finished its first full month of trading in July with a handful of standout winners, even as broader markets swung through heavy volatility. The fund, which launched in late June, filters the 500 largest U.S. stocks through two gates: Wall Street analyst sentiment, then technical price momentum.
RANK tracks the TipRanks US Momentum Analysts Index, calculated by VettaFi LLC. The selection process starts with the 100 stocks that have the highest volume of buy ratings from sell-side analysts tracked by TipRanks. From that pool, the index applies a technical overlay – measuring price trends against long-term moving averages – to pick the 50 names with the strongest upward momentum. The fund rebalances quarterly and caps single-stock and sector weights to keep the portfolio diversified.
Corpay Inc. (CPAY) led the July performance list with a 14.65% gain, the best individual return in the portfolio. Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) followed close behind at 13.95%, contributing 0.83 percentage points to the fund's overall return thanks to its 5.93% average weight during the month. As of Aug. 4, Amazon had become RANK's largest holding at 7%. Baker Hughes Company (BKR) rounded out the top three with a 9% advance.
“For years, many people have struggled to find common ground between fundamental and technical analysis,” wrote Todd Rosenbluth, TMX VettaFi's head of research. “With the new RANK ETF, there can be consensus.”
The fund's dual-filter approach is designed to capture stocks that have both analyst support and technical strength, then refresh the lineup every quarter as sentiment and price trends shift. An institutional webcast scheduled for Aug. 14 will feature Uri Gruenbaum, CEO of TipRanks, and Brendan Cavanaugh, chief strategy officer at Defiance Investments, to discuss the methodology.
VettaFi owns vettafi.com and serves as the index provider for RANK, for which it receives a licensing fee. The fund is not issued, sponsored, or sold by VettaFi or its affiliates.
