Bajrang Lal Bagra is the expected pick to lead the Ram Temple Trust after Champat Rai resigned over donation theft allegations. An SIT probe and interim appointment of Krishna Mohan shape governance risk.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad's Bajrang Lal Bagra is the expected pick to replace Champat Rai as general secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, following Rai's resignation over an alleged donation embezzlement probe. The Trust held a meeting Monday at the Ayodhya temple complex with seven of nine permanent members present. Rai and trustee Anil Mishra were absent, sources told PTI. No official confirmation of the resignation acceptance emerged during the session. Hours later, Treasurer Govind Giri announced that Krishna Mohan would take over as interim general secretary in Rai's place.
The Trust operates independently of government control. The Central Information Commission has ruled it does not qualify as a public authority, exempting it from RTI oversight because it receives no government funding. A Special Investigation Team is examining the alleged theft of donations. The probe received a 15-day extension to widen its scope. Security around the temple complex was tightened ahead of the Monday meeting, with additional police deployed and restrictions imposed on private vehicle movement. Trust President Nritya Gopal Das said those found guilty should face the strictest punishment. He expressed confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to bring wrongdoers to justice, and urged that the issue not be politicised.
Bagra, a chartered accountant from Rajasthan's Sikar district, took over as VHP's international general secretary in February 2024. He spent most of his career in the public sector, serving as chairman and managing director of National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), a Navratna PSU under the Union Ministry of Mines. Earlier he held finance director roles at NALCO and RITES Ltd. After taking voluntary retirement from NALCO, he moved into full-time organisational work with the VHP, holding posts including joint general secretary and president of the Ekal Abhiyan.
Bagra's corporate governance and financial management experience position him as a candidate who could address the trust's operational credibility challenges. The interim appointment of Mohan, however, suggests the permanent succession remains unresolved. The decision on Bagra's elevation will likely follow the SIT's findings, which the trust expects to review during the widened inquiry. The next scheduled meeting date has not been disclosed.
The donation controversy carries political weight given the Ram Temple's symbolic importance to Hindu voters and the ruling party. The trust's exemption from transparency requirements under the RTI Act limits external scrutiny of its internal processes. A prolonged investigation or a politically charged outcome could test donor confidence and the temple's administrative stability.
