Raksha Bandhan falls on Friday, August 28 this year, with the thread ceremony window set from 5:57 AM to 9:48 AM, according to Drik Panchang. The Purnima Tithi begins at 9:08 AM on August 27 and ends at 9:48 AM on August 28, giving devotees a 3-hour-51-minute window for the ritual.
The festival, celebrated on the full moon of the Hindu month of Shravana, involves sisters tying a sacred thread around brothers' right wrists as a symbol of protection. Brothers give gifts and pledge to stand by their sisters. The practice extends beyond biological siblings to cousins, friends and neighbours.
Separately, thousands of villagers in Jharkhand plan to tie rakhis to nearly one lakh trees across 700 villages on Friday as part of a 'Save Tree' campaign, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Sanjiv Kumar told PTI. Kumar will formally launch the campaign by tying a rakhi to a tree in Jorad village in Gumla district.
"Raksha Bandhan is a festival for brothers and sisters. On this day, brothers pledge to protect their sisters. It is also our supreme duty to protect the environment upon which our lives depend," Kumar told PTI.
