Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Jodhpur Airport terminal and the long-awaited refinery-cum-petrochemical complex at Pachpadra in Barmer, Rajasthan, on Saturday. The complex adds processing capacity in a region that has historically relied on imports for petrochemical feedstocks.
State leaders said the projects will boost connectivity and generate employment. For commodity markets, the refinery complex is the more consequential piece. It processes crude oil into LPG and naphtha, among other petrochemicals. The additional domestic supply will reduce the need for imports into western and northern India, traders said.
The new capacity could compress margins for import-dependent refiners in the region, the traders said. The complex also includes a captive power plant and a pipeline network, lowering logistics costs for downstream users. That gives it a cost advantage over standalone refineries that rely on grid power and trucked feedstocks.
India has been expanding its refining capacity to meet growing domestic demand and reduce import dependence. The Pachpadra complex is part of that strategy, state officials said. The additional petrochemical output will also support downstream industries such as plastics and textiles.
The project was originally conceived in the 1990s and faced multiple delays. Its completion now positions Rajasthan as a new petrochemical hub, state officials said. The complex will compete with existing petrochemical hubs in Gujarat and Maharashtra, traders said.
Modi will then head to Gujarat for semiconductor-related engagements. The refinery complex at Pachpadra has been in development for over a decade. Its completion marks a milestone for India's energy security and self-reliance in petrochemicals. The remaining units are scheduled for completion by year-end, state officials said.
