Quebec's $500,000 grant to NioBay funds hydrometallurgical processing of 140 tonnes from Crevier deposit, targeting niobium and tantalum oxides for batteries, superalloys and defense.
NioBay Metals has secured a $500,000 grant from Quebec’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests to advance processing at its Crevier niobium and tantalum project, the company said Monday.
The non-dilutive funding, awarded under the Mining Research and Innovation Support Program, will go toward processing 140 metric tons of material from the Crevier deposit and optimizing the hydrometallurgical process for producing niobium and tantalum oxides. The project sits about 50 km north of Girardville, within the Nitassinan of the Pekuakamiulnuatsh First Nation.
“This financial contribution reflects the government's confidence in our project’s potential and its role in advancing Québec’s critical and strategic minerals sector,” said Jean-Sébastien David, NioBay’s President and CEO. He called the grant an important catalyst for creating value for shareholders and local partners.
Quebec’s Minister of Natural Resources and Forests, Kateri Champagne Jourdain, said NioBay is “one of the only companies in North America capable of producing both niobium and tantalum oxides.” She framed the project as a unique asset for Quebec at a time of growing demand for critical minerals.
Nancy Guillemette, the Member of the National Assembly for Roberval, said the grant is “excellent news for our region and for the future of our mining sector,” adding that the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region has the resources and expertise to contribute to tomorrow’s economy.
The Crevier project will focus on producing niobium oxide for battery and superalloy manufacturers – including defense industry suppliers – and tantalum oxide for high-tech applications. Niobium is used to strengthen steel and aluminum castings, while tantalum is used in electronics and surgical implants.
NioBay holds a 72.5% interest in Crevier and a 100% interest in the James Bay Niobium Project in Ontario. The company said it prioritizes consent and full participation of Indigenous communities in whose territories it operates.
