Some Québec clinics will test an AI-powered system that aims to cut dry eye diagnosis from a multi-appointment process to a single five-minute exam. The hardware-and-software platform, built by Montréal-based AI4Eyes, combines several diagnostic tests into one session and generates a treatment recommendation alongside the result.
The testing runs through the Medteq+ Support Program, a Québec government initiative that selected eight medtech companies for real-world validation. AI4Eyes is receiving $700,000 from the program, on top of the $6.5 million CAD financing round it announced in January.
Dry eye disease affects up to 30 percent of Canadians, according to the company. The condition occurs when the eyes do not produce enough lubrication, causing burning, itchiness, and redness. The prevalence is expected to rise as the population ages and screen time increases.
AI4Eyes uses machine learning and generative AI to identify disease markers from images and patient data. A subdivision of Québec's health agency for the region north of Montréal will assess the image and annotation quality, plus the accuracy of the diagnostic and treatment algorithms.
"Within five minutes, when you walk into the doctor's [office], the doctor already has the diagnosis and treatment suggestion personalized for you," co-founder and CEO Tara Akhavan said earlier this year.
Akhavan founded AI4Eyes in 2020. She previously founded IRYStec Software, a perceptual display processing company acquired by French automotive firm Faurecia (now Forvia) in 2019. Her background includes a master's in AI and a doctorate in image processing and computer vision.
The company's product is designed to reduce testing times and ease caseloads for ophthalmologists. The clinic testing phase will determine whether the platform can move from prototype to routine use in Québec's healthcare system.
